In another edition of the Employee Meeting Q&A, Julie Mann answers several questions pertaining to departments in her division.

With all the construction and remodeling we have done and are continuing to do is their any thought to maybe having some sort of development committee with people from various departments being on it to bounce feedback off of? The construction people do great work and the architect does nice designing it, but sometimes things get overlooked and its especially noticeable to the people who are in that specific area everyday, not the architect or construction company. By the time they have a chance to review it, its already done and too late to make changes.
We do hold meetings to discuss preliminary plans with department representatives. We are planning to hold regular meetings throughout the project to capture changes that are needed prior to it being too late, while yet to contain costs. We will encourage Management to include the appropriate staff for input.

Would it be feasable to consider an on-sight fitness center for employees? I have worked at facilities that had fitness centers and many employees would use them because of the convenience.

Unfortunately, we do not have enough space to create a fitness center on site at this time.

Instead of having Christmas parties per dept, would you ever consider having a hospital-wide Christmas party as in years past. They were a lot of fun and it’s nice to celebrate the season with all employees.

We have considered this but have not found a place that is big enough to hold everyone!

Is there any way to place a badge swipe to enter the front entrance at night? For those of us that have to arrive in the middle of the night, I dont feel safe walking around the building to gain entrance.

We limit the entrances to the building for security reasons for our patients and employees.
Would there be some way of getting a day care in the hospital for all shifts. Not just for the sick kids but for anybody that might have a conflict with getting a sitter. exspecially for people on call who don’t have time to find some one short notice.
There are many regulations concerning setting up a day care environment. We looked into this some years ago and found that we did not have adequate space that met all these requirements.

There should be some way to enter the hospital from the lower parking area, instead of going up et down the slope from ER dept. Patients, family et staff park cars there. Almost every year someone has fallen or close to it, including myself, esp during the winter. Someone could get seriously hurt, then what, fix the problem afterwards. Kind of like shutting the gate after the cows are out.
Thanks for your comments. The Plant Operations staff will work hard to keep the area clear of precipitation. Please help us keep everyone safe by wearing appropriate footwear. We will continue to monitor the situation and look at alternatives.

Could we please see how many total hours are in our Veba account on our Check stub? I know the hours are rolled into it after 320 hours but I would appreciate a tally every check stub. Thanks!

We do not track cumulative hours to the VEBA. When the PDL hours are transferred into VEBA it is converted into non taxable dollars. Employees can access this information at any time through our vendor, Genesis. For assistance to access your personal VEBA account information, please contact Human Resources.

Bereavement days are not enough to cover preparations for visitations, burial, etc. Is there any plan to change this?

We do not have any plans to change the program at this time. Human Resources conducts surveys with other hospitals to make sure we are competitive with this benefit. Please communicate with your Director if you need additional time off which can be covered by PDL.

Can we use the old ER entrance (close to the basement) for employee entrance? It would be beneficial for employees who are “older” or with other medical problems specially during winter.

Employees can use the current ER entrance to enter the hospital. The entrance that was created temporarily is not to be used since we want to restrict traffic through the ER patient areas.

What are the short-term and long-term plans for the area recently vacated by they OPS department on 3rd floor?

Short term, we have renovated room 335 to be the Hospitalist meeting room. Room 340 will be a room for the Residents. We are continuing to evaluate long term plans for this area.

About the old retirement plan ,why haven’t we heard anything about that for all these years and why don’t you start moving it to our current plan so we know what we have coming to us.

Each year around April or May, employees that are participants in this plan get an annual statement about their benefit. Administration continues to oversee and evaluate the timing of when to change this plan. If you have any questions about this plan or any other benefit plan, please contact Human Resources.

When will we get to find out the results/outcomes of the employee survey that we took a few months ago?

This was communicated at the Employee meetings and will be discussed at Leadership throughout next year to work on answering questions and making improvements. Employees can expect to learn more through department meetings, the Connection and the Pulse.

What will be going into the area where Patient Financial Services is moving from in Commerce Towers?

As we make plans to get ready to remodel 1st floor Commerce Towers for centralized Registration, the Diabetes Center will move into the PFS area, along with the Medical Records that was originally on 3rd floor at TSC.

Is it possible to have a system to pay for lunch like the schools use, a debit account system linked to our employee name badge? We could add money to the account then just swipe our badge to pay for meals in the cafe.

We did look into a system utilizing our badges and it was quite expensive. We will look into other options. It may be some sort of “debit card” system. We will keep you posted.

  1. RE:Daycare
"We looked into this some years ago…."
Why not look into it again? I'm sure with vacant spaces around town you could find something that could meet regulations with little updating. It would be a great to have a daycare here.

  2. RE: on-site fitness center
What about the walking track area? It is already being used for a fitness-related area. Why not beef it up a bit and at least put some cushion on the track for better walking conditions? It could even be modeled after Pulm. Rehab!

  4. Is there a way to see the hours that are going into our Veba Account so we can make sure that the calculations match. I know after 320 goes in the account but I never know how many hours are rolled into the account.
