It’s almost that time of year! You’re planning out your Thanksgiving dinner, starting to think about Christmas shopping, and bundling up a little more when you head outside. Here’s one more thing to keep in mind. We’re only a few weeks away from this year’s annual Employee Meetings at the Dixon Theatre.

This year, we want to be able to answer questions efficiently and ensure that everyone gets to hear the answers. So we’re collecting your questions here on The Pulse in advance. Then, regardless of which meeting you attend, you’ll all get to hear all the answers to the questions asked by you and your coworkers.

  1. If a patient bypasses the new Commerce Towers Registration area, what is the best way to direct them back to it? I have had patients complain about waiting in line, I have had patients flat out refuse to return to the lobby, and while I don't mind helping out and getting them registered upstairs, I am aware that there are papers the patients need to sign, and other things I am not trained to do. How can I best help KSB and the patients at the same time, without having anyone upset?

This has been an issue, but with every change that takes place here at KSB and the new improvements, patients should be told with all reminder calls that we have a new place for all registration and that is right as they walk in the front doors. This could be emphasized for a good ammount of time and I believe this would help. We have come up with lots of ways to help down here on the first floor and the awesome help from the valets.

  3. With all the committees being formed on the med/surg floor with employees of all shifts involved, could the meetings be held in the mornings as well as afternoons? It is very difficult for the night shift workers to come to the afternoon meetings only getting a couple of hours sleep in between.

  4. With all of the talk of budget cuts, how does that affect our current construction and rennovation plans?

  5. What is going on with the Cath lab? Why don't we have coverage when Drs. Hanif and ElBzour areon call. It is frustrating to have coverage when you leave in the morning only to find out at 1900 there is no cath lab.

  6. Does switchboard have a better way of telling us what doctors are on call? Sometimes we call and talk to one person and we dont hear back from a MD so we ask to have them paged and then they tell us they aren't on call or the MD calls back and says they are not on call that another MD is. This slows down the process of patient care sometimes.

  7. Could the hospital consider having a professional navigator/ greeter at our front entrance and door 4 to be able to help assist patients and find who , where and sometimes what they need So often patients are unsure of where to go, how to find an area or move from one area to another. We assist them as we do at registration and our valet and volunteers as well , but it still seems we are missing something but not greeting "each" patient upon entry and having the knowledge to be able to answer and direct them without hesitation where they need to be.

  8. Is the hospital in a position to offer a Christmas or Holiday bonus
    to eligible employees this year?

With alot of the mandatory requirements for various inservices is there a way that these could be videotaped so if one was gone they could watch the video at a later time. #2 Could the inservices that require feedback/testing/return demonstration be a part of the twice yearly skills lab so we have at least 2 opportunities to attend?

  10. We have been talking about budget cuts and yet we have 3 RNS working in ICU per shift even if we only have 1 or 2 easy patients. On instances where we need more help, our staff are being placed on call, especially during holidays. There is no consistency here. Who should make decisions on staffing? Many times, staffing for the next shift, say for example for 11 shift, they are already putting staff on low census. This is ICU and things changes pretty fast. I think this is one of the reasons why we have a fast turnover of ICU staffing.

  11. I understand the No Smoking Policy. However since it has went into effect there has been an increase in cigarette buds in the parking lots,walk ways, and landscaping. Would it be possible to still have the cigarette disposals?

  12. What is being done to ensure physician orders are in accordance with new reimbursement rates and requirements?

  13. What are some of the solutions that KSB has come up with as to how to lower the budget costs? That was a question we were asked to help figure out and I would like to know if any of them have helped 🙂

  14. Could we get the window decals that go on the car windows? This would show employee support and help advertise the hospital.

  15. Are there any plans to upgrade the cell phone service at Town Square Centre? There is no coverage in the basement level and it is limited on the 1st floor. I know it is frustrating for the physicians when they are in the clinic and they get a phone call from another physician or a patient and then have to run outside to answer it. Sometimes the calls don't even go through for those on the 1st floor.

  16. Have we considered joining the fight to establish an indoor athletic center in the Dixon area? KSB is the largest employer in the area it would look fantastic to sponsor or assist in the developement of this project.

  17. What should a patient do when they need help going from registration to their designated office? I had a patient recently who walked with a wheelchair up to our office because there was no one who could push her. Can the office be called so we can come help her? or is there someone who can be called for assistance?

  18. With Dr. Khan's passing I assumed that a new physician would be recruited to take over his practice, but have not heard anything about this. I don't believe anyone could fill Dr. Khan's place in the same way he did but still are there plans to replace him? Are the other doctors there simply taking on ALL of his patients? And are there any plans to change the signage at Edwards? I believe the signs still have Dr. Khan's name on them.

  19. Switchboard gets a large amount of call backs from people who have received calls that show up as our main number on their caller ID but no message has been left. This makes it very difficult for the operators to try and help the caller figure out who might have tried to contact them. Would it be possible for the person from our facility calling to leave a name and an ext number? This would not only be helpful to the patients but also the offices trying to contact the patients.

  20. What is the status of the cardiac cath lab for full-time coverage. It is confusing in the evenings and night for ambulance services and ED to know direction for cardiac care? If we are not going to have the service available 24/7 could there be a communication method developed to make ambulance services aware?

  21. Any plans of opening day care for KSB employees' kids? How about those working nights and couldn't find any night care facility to watch their kids?

  22. The number of inservices and mandatory trainings have increased (which I am all for education) however, could healthstream or staff meetings be utilized more frequently to avoid paying the extra salaries for these trainings?

  23. Is there any way that we could have some sort of lunch ticket system that we could put money onto a card and just swipe it in the cafeteria instead of having to use cash/checks?

  24. Are there any plans on putting a debit card system in the cafeteria? I have been in line behind patients/visitors many times when they would like to pay with a debit card and instead are told somewhat confusing directions on where to locate an atm when they already have their tray full of food.

  25. The commerce towers lab has had some excitement over this last month with patients passing out we have been talking with the supervisors about getting a panic button. At times there may be only one of us in there in the event this happens what is the suggestion for the techs as we certainly can not leave our patients to go get a nurse?

  26. As a known employee of KSB, I was approached at a youth basketball game and was asked if Ksb was laying people off? I was in shock at the question that was asked and unable to answer. Is there any truth to the town gossip of Layoffs?

  27. If a debit card machine is not in the near future for the cafeteria could we possibly have an ATM machine installed in the cafeteia area. More ueful for patients and would avoid directions to the ER entrance area.

  28. With all the changes that occurred over the last several months I was wondering if the next commercial we have for TV could emphasize these changes, like the no smoking policy now in effect and the new regisatration areas, Commerce Towers and the new day surgery area. They are also beautiful and could be used to shoot the commercial.

  29. On Monday 12-3-12, we understand that a code black was called at the hospital and commerce towers at about 4:45, by over head page. We were working at TSC at that time, and were not notified of this. What is the procedure for notifying TSC in the event that there is an emergency such as this?

  30. How is the hospital-wide employee meeting considered mandatory, yet people are not allowed to go because it would be overtime? It doesn't seem fair that these employees are not given the opportunity to attend.

I know that KSB offers employee discounts to different gyms in the area to encourage a healthy lifestyle, personally I feel that being one of the areas healthcare providers we as employees should be the first to set the example. Why does ksb offer such small incentives/discounts to employee for the gyms in the area? I think greater incentives would make employees more interested in promoting such a lifestyle. Is there any chance that KSB will offer better incentives at the area gyms, such as Anytime Fittness?

  32. Frequently we have been working with no CNA's on the floor or one CNA for three units. I have also heard other shifts state they are short CNA's. I would rather give up my pay raise and have more staff available. It's hard to do patient personal care and nursing care at the same time. This has been happening more frequently and the stress level has increased.
