October Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985 by the American Cancer Society and a pharmaceutical company.  It is an annual campaign in October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research.  The aim of the campaign from the start has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.  KSB has again erected the large pink ribbon in our circle drive in front of the hospital as a visual reminder for everyone to schedule their annual screening mammogram.

This year’s theme at KSB for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is “Hunting for the Cure”.  We will have various “hunting” activities for the employees throughout the month to promote the theme.  On October 27th, we will have our Annual Pink Shirt Cookout and Raffle in the Cafeteria.  All proceeds from that day will be donated to KSB’s Cancer Care Department to purchase wigs and gas cards to help decrease our patient’s driving expense to Chemo and Radiation appointments.

It’s important to us that we schedule appointments for our patients when it’s most convenient for them so they get the care they need, when they want it.

One thing that we are very excited about this year is that we have purchased the latest in mammography technology by purchasing a Siemens Inspiration Prime … 3D tomography technology!

Breast Tomosynthesis or 3D mammography is an advanced form of breast imaging that uses a low dose x-ray system and computer reconstruction to create three dimensional images of the breast.  While Mammography is the best screening tool for breast cancer, it does not detect all breast cancers.  Breast Tomosynthesis is helping to find some of the hidden cancers that might be missed with standard mammography.  With Breast Tomosynthesis, images are acquired while the x-ray tube moves in an arc over the compressed breast.  The images are reconstructed into a 3D volume and are displayed as slices.  The slices enable the separation of tissue layers and improve the visibility of lesions.  This is important, especially for women with dense breast tissue where tumors are hard to find with standard mammography.

We are so excited at KSB to be able to offer women the latest technology in breast imaging.  We are now able to decrease the amount of false-positive callbacks and detect breast tumors earlier.  Breast cancer has no place to hide!

Patients can make an appointment by calling KSB Central Scheduling at 815-284-5700.
