Rural Hospitals – Caring For Our Communities

ksbpulseUncategorizedLeave a Comment

Our community suffered a horrific farm accident this week.  This follows far too closely on the heels of a house fire that claimed the lives of a family in late October. Rural hospitals play a special role in tragedies.  KSB Hospital’s team of professionals jump into action when a crisis hits, preparing as soon as news is heard of an event.  We train on a regular basis to be prepared to handle whatever comes our way, and when tragedy strikes we are ready to provide care.  The worse feeling is when we find out the injuries were simply too extreme … Read More

Driving Away The Flu

Linda Clemen, Chief Nursing Office to me: I want to do a drive by flu shot clinic. Me: OK. That was the conversation that launched a program that served 673 patients over four Wednesday’s in October, right at the front entrance of KSB Hospital. The KSB Nursing Division took this project on and made it their own, often with volunteer hours dedicated to improving the health of the communities we serve. Pictured are Jerry and Venessa Schnake of Dixon.  They were the lucky 500th vaccination and received a gift certificate to Lori’s Gift, a retail store inside KSB Hospital. I … Read More

Jamming for KSB

Saturday evening KSB Hospital took over the Riverfront in Downtown Dixon to celebrate our successes and encourage financial support of KSB Hospital. Nancy Varga, Jan Woodward, Joan Melzer and Robin Canode spearheaded preparations for an incredible evening of drinks, dining and music.  Thank you for your hard work on behalf of KSB Hospital. I reminded those in attendance of the outstanding work the KSB Family is doing in increasing quality, improving the patient experience, and offering value to our patients. We need your help to bring to our patients and their families, as well as our communities, those “value-added” services, … Read More

Dixon Nice

I grew up in a town of 4,200 people.  I fully admit to having a small-town bias.  And I love Dixon and the small communities in KSB’s service area. As a kid, I knew I appreciated a neighbor giving me a ride home when I crashed my bike on the other side of town.  As a teenager, I was well aware that the threat from a police officer to tell my dad was way scarier than the threat of a ticket. I love the Petunia Festival, Autumn On Parade, Town & Country Days, Depot Days, as well as all the … Read More

Accepting The Award Is… Partnering To Improve Mental Health

It is said that when a football team wins the quarterback gets too much credit, and when they lose the QB gets too much blame.  The same might be said for hospital CEO’s. A few weeks ago KSB Hospital was recognized by Sinnissippi Centers, a community mental health provider, as their Partner of the Year. Mental health touches a significant percentage of any community’s citizens.  I am extremely proud of the work KSB Hospital and our clinical team, led by Chief Nursing Officer Linda Clemen, has done in improving the diagnosis and treatment of those impacted. All I did was … Read More

How do I get a job at KSB?

ksbpulseUncategorizedLeave a Comment

KSB Hospital is one of Lee County’s largest employers. A great work environment, outstanding benefits, and the inherent nature of helping others combine to make KSB an attractive place to work. I am frequently asked how to get a job at KSB.  My answer is consistent:  get your foot in the door, even if it means taking a position for which you might be overqualified. My goal is to get the best talent available.  The first criteria is always a reasonable expectation of the individual fitting with our culture.  Patient and family first, lead with kindness, take care of your … Read More

How is KSB doing?

A great friend of mine asked me one of my favorite questions recently: How is KSB doing? This question gives me the opportunity to share where our organization is and where we are going. As you will see, I am excited about the present as well as the future. My job is to make sure patients that choose KSB have a tremendous experience. I define the patient experience as world-class quality care in a welcoming environment, all provided at a reasonable cost. So how is KSB doing? Quality Care: KSB was recently named a 4-Star hospital by the Centers for … Read More

The Illinois Health and Hospital Association leads the push for a healthier State

ksbpulseUncategorizedLeave a Comment

The Illinois Hospital Association has a group called “Transforming Illinois Healthcare.” I am fortunate to be one of fourteen CEO’s from around the State of Illinois to participate in this group. The goal of the task force is hefty: To support each person’s quest for optimum health, all individuals and communities have access to high-quality health care at the right time in the right setting. Headwinds increasing the complexity of achieving the goal are significant. Our emergency departments are used as primary care clinics.  Patients frequent urgent care centers instead of forming relationships with primary care physicians.  Mental health issues … Read More

Does social media work? A CEO’s Dilemma

ksbpulseUncategorizedLeave a Comment

Google, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram. These are but a few of the available mediums for communication. Are any of them effective? A 2014 study by Social Media Examiner shows “92% of marketers have increased their exposure through social media and 80% had positive results in higher traffic to their site.”  According to the study, increased traffic results in greater brand loyalty, marketplace insights, growing business partnerships and improved sales. That’s great if we are selling golf balls, but does if matter if we are selling hospital services? Image matters. KSB Hospital has built our reputation over 120+ years.  It … Read More
