You’ve Got a Friend in KSB – by KSB board member Doug Lee

A few weeks ago, I was reminded of the value of friends. My friends from Illinois, Iowa and Georgia all converged on Nashville, where three more of our friends live and work. From the joy of our hugs to the hilarity of watching me parallel park, we had a wonderful time. As each day ended, I marveled at my good fortune to have friends who give so much and who, no matter what, are always there.

I believe KSB’s role in the community is to be like a friend — to heal, to support and, most of all, to care. Today’s healthcare landscape, however, is fundamentally changing how hospitals serve their patients. The desire to reward providers for keeping populations healthy is admirable, but the focus on large populations leaves organizations like KSB wondering where they fit into this new system.

Today, the fit between rural communities and a great health system like KSB is clear. The system provides an array of physicians, in facilities that include emergency departments, hospitals, clinics and more. With a variety of tools, they bring specialized treatment to the patients in their communities. They also provide hundreds of jobs and annually reinvest millions of dollars in these small towns and cities.

Like a good friendship, however, this relationship must go both ways. Local health systems can’t survive without local support. For KSB, that support takes many forms — participation in our wellness activities, donations and volunteering, as well as simply having confidence in our local caretakers. KSB remains humbly grateful for that support, as it has for more than a century.

Undeniably, the future of health care is uncertain. One thing that is certain, however, is that no matter what issues swirl around us, the people of KSB Hospital will not lose sight of their role in our community. They will heal. They will support. They will care.

That, after all, is what friends do.
