High school and college job shadowing by Christy Pierce, KSB Hospital Director of Human Resources
Job shadowing at KSB Hospital provides an opportunity for students to learn more about health care careers. Job shadowing also can help students gain the observation hours they need to apply to health care-related degree programs. KSB hosts students who are attending high school through medical school, and the shadowing experiences last from a few hours up to a few months. Some students even return for two to three additional visits, so they can observe different areas. In the past five years we have had 687 students shadow at KSB; in 2015 alone we hosted 204 students! These students came from numerous area High Schools and Colleges.
High Schools: Dakota High School, Dixon High School, Morrison High School, Newman Central Catholic High School, Oregon High School, and Rock Falls High School
Colleges: Augustana College, Aurora University, Brown Mackie College, Butler University, Chamberlin College of Nursing, Clarke University, College of DuPage, Concordia University, Hamilton Technical University, Highland Community College Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, Loras College, Monmouth College, Northern Illinois University, Northwestern College, Rock Valley Community College, St. Ambrose University, St. Louis University, Sauk Valley Community College, Truman State University, University of Illinois, Valparaiso University, and Walden University
While a student is shadowing, he or she can experience the hospital or clinic setting as well as to observe duties performed by the health care worker they are shadowing. Shadowing experiences are available in most departments in the hospital as well as in the clinics. A student would be able to see one on one patient care in the clinics with a physician, learn more about patient care in the Medical/Surgical department, or even observe physical therapy in our Rehab Services department.
It is a great way to learn about a career; you get to spend a day (or more) in the life of a health care worker!
If a student is interested in shadowing at KSB Hospital, they should contact the Human Resource Department at 815-285-5616 to get the process started.
